Rock Climbing
Rock climbing can be one of the most enjoyable
of all climbing activities. Warm weather, beautiful rock,
amazing exposure, rock climbing has it all. Rock climbing is
often a persons first exposure to the mountain environment and allows
a solid background of skills to be mastered and then potentially
applied to the other forms of mountain adventure. Single pitch
crag style rock climbing to big wall multi day adventures, there is
something for everyone.
There is endless
potential for rock climbing in western Canada. Near Canmore and
Banff in the Rockies there are numerous cragging and multi pitch
cliffs with hoards of classic climbs. Grassi Lakes, Lake Louise,
Grotto Canyon, Cougar Canyon, Heart Creek. Mt Yamnuska with Red
Shirt, Directissima, Kahl Wall, Forbidden Corner, Unnamed, Grillmairs,
to name a few of the classic moderates. Ha Ling Peak (formerly
known as Chinamans peak), with the NE Face, Quick Release, Premature
Ejaculation, Sisyphus Summits. East End of Mount Rundle with
Raptor, True Grit, Geriatrics, EEORs Tail, Dropout, Reprobate.
Further West there
is Skaha, in Penticton British Columbia which offers amazing single
pitch cragging on solid rock. Skaha makes an excellent spring or
fall trip due to its warm weather, and often is possible when other
areas are still cold and wet. West still is Squamish BC with its
famous granite slabs and walls offering both single pitch and multi
pitch crack and slab climbing with a short approach.
The planet is
littered with unbelievable rock climbing areas. I have climbed
extensively in the American West and know many of the well known areas
such as Yosemite, Indian Creek/ Moab, Joshua Tree, Red Rocks, City of
the Rocks etc.
Overseas,
venues such as the beaches of Thailand the Mediterranean coasts of
France and Italy, and scores more are great for rock climbing in warm
weather and in a different culture. Let me show you some of my
favorite rock climbing areas on earth!!
Regardless of
ability and experience, there is something for everyone.
Season- endless depending on location
