Ski Touring

Envision yourself floating down the mountain slope in deep endless powder.  As you scream in delight, the light glints off the new snow crystals and you are in a magical winter wonderland.  Ski touring is all this and more!  Alpine bowls, high mountain glaciated terrain, and great tree skiing all await you.

The Rocky, Columbia, and Coast range Mountains of Western Canada are home to arguably the best powder skiing in the world.  Cool temperatures and the general trend of the jet stream and associated weather patterns, as well as the topography give unbelievable powder skiing conditions.  Add into that formula easy access, numerous comfortable backcountry lodges and huts and you have yourself an unbeatable destination for a ski touring trip.  Weather it is day tour, or a multi day commercial lodge based powder week, you will not forget your experience.

Locations such as Rogers Pass, Bow Summit, Duffey Lakes, Kananaskis Country, and many others offer excellent day touring possibilities within close proximity to towns.  As well, off piste skiing at many of the ski resorts such as Whistler Blackcomb, Lake Louise, Sunshine Village, Fernie and more round out the possibilities of day trips.

Western Canada has a very large number of commercial lodges that offer fully catered ski weeks in comfortable lodges with delicious food.  Check the Trips page for upcoming trips to these lodges.

Hut based ski touring offers a different experience as well.  Many hut trips you would base out of a hut for a week of skiing accessing it either by ski or by helicopter.  As well there are several trips that would enchain several huts to make more of a traverse with skiing on route.  Examples :Wapta Icefields, Spearhead Traverse.

Yet another option for the wilderness enthusiast is a camp based ski touring trip.  Here you either ski out of a "base camp", or do a traverse style trip moving camp as you go.  With this the possibilities are endless, as are the untracked runs that await you!

International ski touring possibilities also exist.  Europe has excellent hut based ski trips with beautiful huts and easy access.

     Season-  January - May (Canada)
